Prevent identity fraud
After a death, several weeks may pass before all banks and authorities block accounts. Below are immediate steps to prevent abuse.
Block bank cards
- Card Stop: 24/7 on 078 170 170
Call Card Stop to block all Belgian bank cards of the deceased immediately. You will need name and date of birth.
ID card (eID) and passport
- Doc Stop: 00800 2123 2123
Doc Stop blocks the electronic functions of the eID. Also report the death to the town hall that holds the card.
Report fraud
- Federal Police: eCops (online complaint)
For suspected abuse you can file a complaint online via eCops. Also contact your local police zone.
- FPS Economy: fraud reporting
For commercial fraud (scam emails, false invoices in the deceased's name).
Honest note: Card Stop and Doc Stop are free and operate 24/7. Building a fraud case can take weeks. Keep all suspicious emails, letters and transactions.
